I am a senior from Blackville, South Carolina.  At Duke, I study History in addition to being in the Secondary Teaching Certification program.  Beyond academics, I am involved on campus and the Durham community in several different capacities.  These include being a third-year Resident Assistant to first year students, a member of Dukes and Duchesses Student Ambassadors, and a tutor at a local community center.  Of course, my most meaningful campus involvement is my leadership in the Reginaldo Howard Scholarship organization and our commitment to issues of social justice.

My specific intellectual and career interests lie in teaching, education policy, and the implications of school culture and inequalities for various social groups.  After teaching high school for some years, I hope to combine these interests and pursue a Doctor of Education degree.  I spent this past summer in South Africa studying its education system, particularly the complex legacy apartheid has left for its schools.  This is one of several opportunities that the Reggie Howard scholarship program has afforded me in my academic and social pursuits here at Duke.
