A sophomore from Newton, Massachusetts, Leigh Soares is still impressed daily by her Blue Devil peers. She took the experimental approach to academics her first year but has finally decided to major in history, hopefully with a concentration on Africa. This summer she would like to take her interests in education, human rights, and women’s empowerment abroad for a possible internship, perhaps funded by DukeEngage. For the time being, though, she has her hands full with schoolwork and extracurricular activities. Aside from the Reginaldo Howard Scholars program, Leigh is a member of the First-Year Advisory Council, Craven Quad Council, and On Tap. She is also a work-study student for both the literature program and the African and African-American Studies department. In her spare time, she loves to dance, sing, play word games, and watch sports (especially her Boston teams!).
