Lenzie Barnes
Lenzie Barnes was born in Selma, NC in 1916 and moved to Durham in the
early 1920's, where he graduated from Hillside High School in 1934. His
father was a contractor who built a number of houses and churches in
Durham. Mr. Barnes attended the North Carolina College for Negroes, now
known as North Carolina Central University. After taking the civil
service exams, Mr. Barnes moved to Washington D.C. and worked for the
Postal Service for thirty years. He also served four years in the Army
during World War II. Returning to Durham in the early 1970's, Mr. Barnes
began a housing development firm and also worked on several highway
projects before retiring in the late 1980's. He lives happily in a house
he built near N.C. Central.
