Course load: a minimum of 30 units (10 courses), of which up to 9 units (3 courses) may be Independent Study. No credit may be transferred into the program from elsewhere. Minimum registration for part-time students is 6 units per semester. The full-time load is 15 units. M.A. papers and examination: There is no thesis requirement. Students normally submit two substantial papers arising from coursework to a committee appointed by the program director and chaired by their advisor. This committee meets with the student to discuss both the papers and the students' overall course of study.
