MEMORANDUM
To: Humanities & Social Sciences Faculty, Trinity College of
Arts & Sciences
From: Richenel Ansano, Associate Director
Subject: Call for Proposals for 2004-2005
Faculty Seminar
(DEADLINE NOVEMBER 17, 2003)
Date: October 9, 2003
On behalf of 2004-2005 Faculty Co-Conveners Helen Solterer and
Janet Ewald, I invite you to apply for a fellowship in next year’s
John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute Seminar with the theme of
“Knowledge and
Its Institutions.” The 2004-2005 Seminar will consist
of Faculty Research Fellows from the College of Arts & Sciences,
one faculty member from the professional schools, a professional
librarian, a Mellon Lecturing Fellow, and Graduate Research Fellows.
For the Faculty Research Fellowships, all tenured, tenure-track
and regular rank faculty are eligible to apply. As with all previous
Seminars, we shall be looking for a mix of junior and senior faculty
spanning a wide range of departments, methodologies, and historical
periods in the humanities and social sciences. We are committed
to diversity in the fullest sense of the word. As with all residential
Seminars, we continue our commitment to issues of social equity,
historical memory, race, and justice--values exemplified by the
work of our namesake John Hope Franklin.
Faculty Research Fellows will be appointed for a period of one
year, beginning in August 2004. In exchange for yearlong participation
in seminar discussions, luncheons, and other seminar-related activities,
the Institute will arrange for a one-semester (two courses) release
from teaching. Teaching replacement for your department will be
coordinated with your leave and typically provides instruction for
two courses in your absence.
In addition to participating in a collaborative, cross-departmental
institutional effort to enrich and support the humanities and social
sciences at Duke, as a Faculty Research Fellow, it is hoped that
you will find precious time for thinking, writing, and other knowledge
activities as well as innovative course development. You will be
provided with a quiet, fully equipped office in the John Hope Franklin
Center for International & Interdisciplinary Studies. We encourage
participating faculty to hold their office hours in the Franklin
Center and use this office for their writing and research. The Center
has a library-delivery service that enables research materials to
be delivered quickly and efficiently. Additionally, Fellows have
the opportunity to teach their courses at the Franklin Center. The
Franklin Center is especially eager to host undergraduate and graduate
courses on topics similar to the theme of the Faculty Seminar and
so students can take advantage of events sponsored by the Seminar.
