Graduate Research Fellowship Opportunity
“Knowledge and Its Institutions”

The John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute is pleased to announce the availability of fellowships for the 2004-2005 academic year. We invite you to assist us by nominating up to three graduate students from your department.

Graduate fellows who participate in the Seminar will receive a $6,000 award, as well as a fully appointed shared office (computer, desk, bookshelves, access to library deliver services, etc.) in the Franklin Center. The term of appointment is September 1, 2004 – May 31, 2005.

The 2004-2005 Faculty Seminar, “Knowledge and its Institutions,” will be co-convened by Helen Solterer (Romance Studies) and Janet Ewald (History). The Seminar will consist of Faculty Research Fellows from the College of Arts & Sciences, a faculty member from one of the professional schools, a professional librarian, a Mellon Lecturing Fellow, and two Graduate Research Fellows. The Faculty Fellows come from departments across the humanities and social sciences, as well as one representative from one of Duke’s professional schools.

Attached is a description of the 2004-2005 Seminar topic and the application procedure. For more information on the Seminars and the John Hope Franklin Humanities Institute, please contact Richenel Ansano, r.ansano@duke.edu or 919.668.1904.

Graduate Research Fellowships

Eligibility Requirements

These two Fellowships are designated for advanced graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. A Graduate Research Fellowship does not preclude graduate students from taking on additional teaching and/or research responsibilities provided that these activities do not adversely affect participation in the Seminar and/or progress toward completion of their degree. This Graduate Research Fellowship entails no teaching duties.
