Climbing and Belay Certification
In order to climb at the wall participants must either complete a belay and wall orientation class or pass the advanced belay test.
Classes
Classes are currently held on Monday from 4-5pm and Wednesday from 6-7 and are limited to 16 participants that are pre-registered.
Costs
The cost of the class is $25 and can only be paid for using your flex account. The certification is good for the 2009-2010 school year and includes the following:
- No cost to climb when wall is open
- Trained and qualified staff
- Use of ropes, harnesses, carabineers, belay devices, chalk balls, climbing shoes and helmets
- Maintaining current climbing routes
- Adding additional routes each month
- Safety Inspections
Class Content
- Wall administrative procedures
- Identify a variety of climbing equipment
- Properly put on harness
- Connect a belay device and rope to the harness
- Tie a figure eight follow through and finish knot
- Verbalize belay commands and establish a belay contract with a climber
- Belay Catch an announced and unannounced fall
- Lower a climber from the wall
Advanced Belay Test
Experienced climbers may "test" out of the class by demonstrating the
above skills without coaching from the staff or fellow climber. In the
event you are unable to perform the above skills satisfactorily for a
member of the climbing wall staff, you will be asked to sign up for the
complete class.
