Pre-event checklists

Pre-Event Bike Check-Up
A Formula 1 racer wouldn't just jump in his car on race day and begin the race without first ensuring first that the oil has been changed and the brakes are clean. In the same way, a cyclist needs to prepare his machine before race day arrives. Two to three days before a big event, clean your bike and complete a thorough maintenance check. By completing a maintenance check, major malfunctions during the event can be prevented. Check to make sure that the tires and brakes are in good working order and are not too worn. Inspect all the welds on the bike as you are drying it. Make sure that the chain is clean, lubed, and in good condition. Check the teeth on the chainrings and cassette to make sure that they are in good condition. Ensure that the proper cassette for the terrain has already been installed. Make sure that the bike is shifting well (the bike should be able to change gears in half a pedal stroke). These little steps can prevent a major mechanical malfunction on the course and reduce the stress of trying to find a bike store that is open at 7AM on a weekend!
Once it's 7AM and you're ready to ride, check to ensure that wheels which may have been removed for transport are securely installed on the bike. Check air pressure, check for brake drag, and make sure you've put in cages any water bottles you intend to carry during the ride. Your bike will then be as ready to race as you are!
