Duke impounds Hoyas 9-3
ROCKVILLE, MD -- Duke completed a perfect road trip on Saturday
night in impressive fashion by hammering the Georgetown Hoyas
9-3. The Blue Devils used an all-around team effort to pick
up another two league points and finish the first semester with
an impressive 9-1-1 record, 4-0-1 in the ACCHL.
The Blue Devils opened the scoring early on a goal by Robert
Fogarty. The tally was set up by an outstanding play along
the wall by Alex Putterman. Duke then took a 2-0 lead into
the first intermission when Dave Rabin connected on a nice
give-and-go with Jeff Lake.
The Hoyas started the second period furiously, scoring three
unanswered goals in the frame’s opening ten minutes.
However, a courageous Blue Devil squad responded with three
unanswered tallies of their own to close out the second frame.
The Devils tied the score at three on the power play with
a Jeff Lake one-timer off of a nice feed from brother Steve.
Duke then jumped on top 4-3 when Robert Fogarty split the
defense and ripped the puck upstairs for his second goal of
the game. The fifth goal was again a product of the “Great
Lakes” as Steve converted a rebound off of Jeff’s
shot from the top of the crease.
After the high-scoring second period, the determined Blue
Devils shut the door on the Hoyas in the third. Blue Devils
goalie Clayton Jernigan was outstanding, as he has been all
season, turning away every Hoya shot in the period. Jernigan
got some help as well in the form of a four-goal offensive
onslaught.
First, Dave Bradley and Eric Shepsman netted goals on the
same shift to put Duke ahead 7-3. Jeff Lake then blasted a
slapshot past a helpless Hoyas netminder and a Brian Markowitz
marker rounded out the scoring. After seven unanswered goals
in the final two periods, Duke left Cabin John Ice Rink with
a satisfying 9-3 victory.
GAME NOTES
Jeff Lake and Robert Fogarty were Duke’s Mad Dog players
of the game… Although the game was fairly rough, only
seven penalties were called… Duke has outshot every
opponent thus far this season... Robert Fogarty collected
a total of three goals and three assists in both games over
the weekend...The team would like to thank the parents who
made it to the games this weekend as well as the Eric Markowitz
brigade for their support… The team would also like
to thank Abbott Trailways for their fantastic travel services,
and Duke Magazine reporter Pat Adams for making the trip with
the team… Duke finished the fall semester with a 9-1-1
record, good for first place in the ACCHL. The Blue Devils
will next take the ice next year after the squad enjoys its
winter holiday vacation. Duke’s next game will be a
non-league contest on January 10 against VCU at the Triangle
SportsPlex.
