Duke swats Yellow Jackets 7-0
HILLSBOROUGH, NC -- Duke ran its record to 5-1 with an impressive
7-0 shutout of the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets on Friday night.
Duke goalie Clayton Jernigan, who has been terrific all season
for the Blue Devils, turned away all 29 Georgia Tech shots while
Jeff Lake and Bert Maidment each had two tallies for Duke.
Jeff Lake's initial marker came 10:26 into the opening frame
and the tally was all Duke would need. The goal came on a
timely delay near the blueline by Lake who then dished the
puck to his brother Steve. Steve returned the puck to Jeff
who snapped it past a helpless Roland Sperlich, the Yellow
Jacket goaltender.
It would be more of the same for Sperlich all night as he
faced a tenacious Blue Devil offensive attack that peppered
the former Merrimack goalie with 44 shots. Jeff Lake scored
his second goal with 1:58 left in the first period on the
power play. Jernigan not only blanked the Yellow Jackets,
he has more points than the entire team as he had an assist
on Lake's second goal.
Brian Markowitz put Duke up 3-0 with another power-play goal
on a nifty wrap-around just 23 seconds after the Lake tally.
Duke took a 3-0 lead into the locker room but didn't let up.
Coach Selman informed his charges that good teams play all
three periods and the team heeded his advice.
Indeed, second period goals by Ben Tyson and Bert Maidment
gave a Duke a 5-0 lead after two periods as Jernigan continued
to shut the door. Tyson's goal came on a quick shot into the
upper corner of the net while Maidment converted on a nice
pass from Markowitz. Sperlich had no chance on either play.
The third was more of the same for Duke, as the team was
determined to close the deal and also maintain the shutout.
Maidment added his second of the game on a perfect wrist shot
to the upper corner of the net past a frustrated Sperlich.
Dave Bradley finished the scoring by chipping in a Ben Peterson
shot.
Duke was pleased with its total team effort. Said versatile
Ben Peterson, "I was pleased with our effort tonight.
Our first shutout in four years is a testament to the fact
that every single player came to the barn ready to play."
Peterson and the Blue Devils look forward to the next Duke
contest, which will take place next Friday evening at 10:15
PM at the SportsPlex. Duke will look to extend its five-game
win streak as the Richmond Spiders come to town.
