Blue Devils halt Hokies 4-2
HILLSBOROUGH, NC -- Duke picked up its first win of the season
on Friday night with a 4-2 win over Virginia Tech. The game
was Duke's first home game of the season and the contest was
the first ACCHL game for both squads.
Duke jumped on the board first on a breakaway goal by Robert
Fogarty about five minutes into the game. Fogarty took a great
pass from Steve Lake and roofed the puck for his first goal
of the season. The Devils took a 2-0 with 1:24 left in the
first period on a Steve Lake tally.
The Hokies then fought back, scoring once in the second and
then tying the game with 6:24 left in the third period. However,
Steve Lake responded with his second goal of the game just
eight seconds after the Hokies had tied the game. Fogarty
would put the game away for Duke with an empty net goal with
37 seconds left.
Duke goalie Clayton Jernigan was outstanding in his Duke
debut between the pipes. The law student turned away 38 of
40 Hokie shots and made several outstanding saves throughout
the game. Also, Steve Lake's clutch goals and overall great
game earned him him "Mad Dog" Player of the Game
honors for the third time in his Duke career.
Duke will look to improve to 2-1 on the season next Friday,
October 24 at the SportsPlex. Vanderbilt will be coming to
town for two games against the Blue Devils. Friday's game
will begin at 10:15 PM and the puck will drop Saturday at
8:00 PM.
