Georgia defeats Duke 4-2
DULUTH, GA -- In their first two road games of the season, the
defending ACCHL champion Blue Devils came up short of expectations.
Opening at the University of Georgia on Friday night, it took
some time for Selman’s team to find their legs. Georgia
came out hard and immediately used their size to their advantage
as they played Duke very physically. After several chances for
both teams early on, Georgia jumped out to a 1-0 lead halfway
through the stanza on a slapper from the top of the left circle.
Both teams came out hard in the second period, but Georgia
maintained their edge and added to their lead with a power
play goal a little over three minutes in. Georgia extended
their lead to three a few minutes later with a shorthanded
goal from their penalty killing unit. Staring down a three
goal deficit halfway through the game, the Devils finally
got some jump and began playing better hockey. With five minutes
left in the period Dan Phan tallied a power play goal off
a feed from fellow freshman Dan Larrea. Larrea took the puck
down the right side and fed Phan who was on the left doorstep
of the net. Phan quickly roofed the puck into a wide open
net as the goalie had no chance of sliding across in time
to make the save.
After a more productive second period, yet still way short
of Duke’s norm, the Blue Devils continued to press at
Georgia’s lead. Less than four minutes in things looked
to continue to go in Georgia’s way as Duke was called
for a holding penalty. The Devil’s penalty kill began
with solid defensive play that forced a bad pass from a Georgia
skater. The puck hopped over the defenseman’s stick
and into the neutral zone where Ben Tyson picked it up for
a shorthanded breakaway. Tyson cruised in from the left side
and ripped a sick wrister over the goalie’s glove to
bring the Blue Devils to within one.
Duke fought hard the remainder of the period and peppered
Georgia’s goalie with shots from all over the offensive
zone. Unfortunately the puck would not bounce their way on
several key chances late in the stanza, in particular on a
rebound shot by Bert Maidment which the goalie managed to
just make a toe save on. The Bulldogs iced their victory with
a minute left in the game with a low wrist shot that beat
Clayton Jernigan to bring the final score to 4-2.
