In loving memory of Rachel Sherman '97

Katherine Robinson '97 writes:

"It is with great sadness that we are writing to let you know that Rachel Haberkern Sherman '97 passed away in a two car accident last Sunday evening, April 15th.  She was the only person in the car. Rachel was returning home from her 10th reunion weekend at Duke to Charlottesville, VA where she lived with her husband, Steve Sherman '95.

"Rachel joined Lady Blue in the spring of 1994. We were freshmen. I yapped about how much I loved LB so often that she finally decided to audition. Her first solo was the Lisa Loeb hit, "Stay." She went on to arrange numerous songs for LB, including Fleetwood Mac's "Little Lies," Trisha Yearwood's "She's in Love with the Boy" and Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do with It?"

"Some of my favorite times with Rach were when we were with Lady Blue. She loved the Dewey Beach trips each summer before school started. She sang karaoke until all hours of the night in Krissy's room, would treat me to beers at the Hideaway after rehearsals, and would be one of the first people to volunteer to sell tickets and make posters for our concerts. Hosting visiting a cappella groups and traveling on Lady Blue spring break trips topped her list of favorite activities.

"Rach graduated from Duke in 1997 and then attend that other school 9 miles down the road where she earned a Masters in Social Work. Most recently, she worked for The Finance Project in Washington, D.C. as a researcher and
writer helping community organizations across the country finance and sustain local programs for children and families. She was an active volunteer for Planned Parenthood and the Junior League of Charlottesville.
She played soccer and ran marathons with Team in Training, serving as a team captain for the organization's Alaska marathon in 2004...

"A service will be held for Rachel at the Duke Chapel this coming Saturday, April 21st, at 9:00 am. A reception will be held at the Divinity School following the service.

"In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Rachel to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society or The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. The Lady Blue Alumnae Association is currently brainstorming ideas about a contribution we could make to honor Rachel that is related to the music we all share. If you have ideas about this gift, music we could sing at the service, photos and stories to share etc., please contact Kristine Singley '96 at kristine.singley@comcast.net or ( 321) 217-3924 or me at katherinerob@gmail.com or (415) 254-2756."
