Langdorm Overview

The Language House (Langdorm) was founded in 1988, as a result of requests from students returning from Study Abroad programs who wanted to continue to practice the language. It has since expanded to include all students interested in foreign languages. Langdorm now lives in the second and third floors of Keohane 4A building, consisting of Chinese, French, German, Japanese and Spanish halls. Members with different proficiencies in their language of interest share a common bond in their dedication to experience all aspects of the language. Not only do we help each other learn the language, we celebrate the cultures from which the languages originate. From the sights and sounds of modern films to the aromas and tastes of traditional holidays, we truly live the language.

FAQs

How often are the languages spoken?
Each hall sets its own policies. Since we don’t all know all of the languages spoken here, we tend to communicate in English on a day to day basis. Each hall, though, usually sets aside time to speak to each other in their language. We have all levels, from beginner to native speaker, and we get a chance to learn and practice.

What is it like living in Lang Dorm?
In a nutshell, it’s foody and fun.

How are halls organized?
We have two corridors, so we try to cluster halls together so that members can live nearer to each other. However, there are cases where we can’t do that, so halls are somewhat intermingled with others. Each hall is headed by a hall representative, and they are responsible for putting on their own events and setting some policies.

What if I want to create a new hall?
If you can find a group of at least 5 people enthusiastic about creating a new hall and being a part of the Language Dorm, it is possible. That said, we would be more than happy to help you create a new hall, just contact us as soon as possible to get the process started. Currently we are interested in launching Arabic or Hindi hall.
