2000-2001

Durham Life Chain 2000 - 10/1/00 - Once again, held signs saying "Abortion Kills Children" in silent protest of the culture of death that is gripping our nation and indeed the whole world.

Rock the Vote button. Rock the Vote - 10/6/00 - Educated the newest voters among the student population about the pro-life issues in the presidential race. 300 new voters were registered.

Bridge painting. Bridge Painting - 10/8/00 - Painted pro-life messages on the East Campus bridge, traditionally a place of legal graffiti used to express student opinions and announcements. Messages included

  • 4000 US ABORTIONS PER DAY - DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOUR CHILDREN ARE?
  • LIFE IS EVERYBODY'S RIGHT
  • MORNING-AFTER PILL DOES NOT EQUAL CONTRACEPTION
  • ADOPTION, THE BETTER CHOICE.

Election literature. Election Literature - 11/5/00 - Flyered car windshields at about a dozen churches to inform local Christians about the candidates' positions on abortion. Some churches asked us to leave, others gave us their blessing. We did our part to support pro-life politics at this critical hour with almost 1500 election flyers and PAC voting cards. We even flyered Coach K's car while parked at church.

Morning-After Pill Policy - 11/6/00 - Collected 900 SIGNATURES over a single weekend in October in order to petition the Duke Student Government to add the following question to its November 6, 2000 referendum:

"Should all Duke undergraduate students be required to pay for the Morning-After Pill out of the mandatory Student Health Fee?"

Morning-After Pill flyer. We wanted to keep funds derived from the mandatory Student Health Fee from going to pay for free morning-after pill kits. The policy was changed only since August, and the MAP IS NOT CURRENTLY SUBSIDIZED by Student Health Fee funds, but the policy could revert back to the opposite just as easily as it changed in August.

WE WON THE REFERENDUM 49% no to 46% yes, and we have shown that student opinion does not favor using student funds to pay for abortions.

Cemetery of the Innocents. Cemetery of the Innocents - 3/28/01 - After an unsuccessful attempt to bring the Genocide Awareness Project to Duke, we decided to have a Cemetery of the Innocents, 400 white crosses on House P quad to represent the 4000 abortions performed in the U.S. everyday. It was a powerful visual statement, and it drew a lot of students who wanted to confront the issue of abortion. Responses were mixed. Some encouraged us. Others cursed us and destroyed crosses. Some engaged us in conversation. Others tried to provoke us with one-liners as they continued to walk by.

Speaking for Life - Spring 2001 - President Steve Hong attempted to go around to all the major Christian ministries on campus to share with them the importance and urgency of the pro-life movement. Speaking from the perspective of a student who feels called by God to be an advocate for the unborn, he hoped to better educate Christians and help them better articulate their own pro-life positions.

He has spoken to Cambridge Campus Ministry, the Baptist Student Union, the Raleigh Chinese Christian Church College Group, and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, as well as a number of independent bible studies and secular venues including Cleland House.
