1999-2000

Standing Up for Life - 10/3/99 - Stood on Roxboro Rd. at the Durham Life Chain in silent protest of abortion. More than 900 life chains were formed across North America this day. Responses from passing drivers were mixed, but we did our part.

Durham Life Chain 1999.

Guest speaker: Barbara Holt. November 18, 1999
Guest speaker: Barbara Holt, President of North Carolina Right to Life.
Topics included:

  • Activities of NCRTL, specifically in the political arena
  • Loose legal definition of women's health concerns that allows legal abortions at every stage of development, even just before delivery.
  • Various legal battles currently being fought in the House and Senate (Unborn Victims of Violence Act, Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act, etc.)
  • Positions of our legislators on life issues. Congressman David Price of this district and Senator Jonathan Edwards have both consistently voted pro-choice. Also the President has opposed pro-life legislation.

Guest speaker: Kristen Suh October 28, 1999
Guest speaker: Kristen Suh of King's Park International Church.
Topics included:

  • Unconvincing arguments used to distinguish between the value of life inside and outside the womb: 1) size, 2) level of development, 3) environment, 4) dependence
  • Brief history of abortion: Roe v Wade, Doe v Bolton
  • Methods of abortion: saline poisoning, D & C, D & X (partial-birth), etc.
  • Stages of human development from conception to birth
  • Graphic video presentation showing the horrifying products of abortion
  • Ultrasound video of Kristen's own baby girl.
  • Reflection on God's love of His creation (Psalm 139) and a message of His forgiveness for women who have had abortions.

Guest speaker: Loretta Thompson. January 21, 2000
Number in attendance: 53
Guest speaker: Loretta Thompson, Vice-President and Communications Director of NC Right to Life.
Program included:

  • Performances by a cappella groups Sapphire and Something Borrowed Something Blue
  • A moving testimony of sin and redemption by Loretta, how she had an abortion that almost killed her and eventually resulted in two miscarriages but found forgiveness and healing in Christ. Her story is sadly too typical on college campuses even now.
  • An unveiling of the mystery behind the many ways that Duke promotes abortion including, among other things, free abortion pills (lo-Ovral) paid with the mandatory Student Health fee.
  • Candlelight prayer for the victims of 27 years of violence against the unborn. Remembering the almost 40 million unborn lives lost, children who never had a chance to take their first steps, taste Mom's apple pie, fall in love, get married, have children, or do any of the other things we all take for granted. Like Loretta said, we are all survivors of the holocaust. We must remember and pray for those who perished.
  • Read about the event in The Chronicle.
