Shamiya Lucas granted the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship!

Rising junior linguistics major, Shamiya Lucas, was awarded the Mellon Mays Undergraduate Fellowship during the Spring 2009 semester.

Fellows are selected from an extraordinarily competitive field of undergraduates at 42 of the best academic institutions across the country. The program, which aims to increase the presence of minorities in academia, offers student loan repayment and research allowances during the academic year and the summer.

Fellows design a substantial research project in conjunction with a faculty member. Linguistics instructor, Jim Fitzpatrick, will be working with Shamiya as she carries out her project, a linguistic examination of gender and language.
