Duke University, in cooperation with North Carolina State University, offers a PhD in English Linguistics. This program has a diversified curriculum with an emphasis on cutting-edge methodologies, field- based research, engaged sociolinguistics, and a commitment to gaining employment for all students.  Duke's English Department is rated as one of the top five in the country by US News and World Report.

North Carolina State University is the premier field-initiated research program in language variation studies in the United States. NCSU is listed as one of the top five sociolinguistics programs in North America by The Real Guide to Graduate School (Lingua Franca).

Students receive their degree from Duke, but work with faculty at both North Carolina State University and Duke throughout their study. This collaborative program requires students to be admitted through the regular admissions process in Duke's English Graduate Studies.

The Duke faculty includes professors with formal training in language and linguistics, Edna Andrews and Julie Tetel Andresen; and includes experts in the psychology of language, Ruth Day and Reiko Mazuka.  Professor William O'Barr focuses on language in the Cultural Anthropology Department.

The NC State faculty includes Walt Wolfram, William C. Friday Distinguished Professor who specializes in language variation and social and ethnic dialects; Associate Professor Erik Thomas, who focuses on instrumental phonetics and regional dialectology; and Assistant Professor Agnes Bolonyai who specializes in language contact and bilingualism.

Duke Linguistics is located on the third floor in the Allen Building on the West Campus green in Durham, North Carolina.

NC State University Linguistics is located on the second floor of Tompkins Hall on Hillsborough Street in Raleigh, North Carolina.  A 30 minute drive separates the Duke and NC State campuses.
