4th Year Electives and Residency Info

Emergency Medicine at Duke is in a transition period.  Our Division Chief, Dr. Kathleen Clem, is working to transform the Emergency Department in a number of important ways.  One of the most significant issues that is in discussion now is whether or not to begin an EM residency at Duke.  A committee is working on this important issue currently.  They will report their findings soon to key decision makers at Duke University Medical Center.

For now the Emergency Department operates in a traditional way.  Surgical residents see trauma patients, and other patients with surgical problems.  Medical residents care for patients with medical chief complaints.  Pediatric patients are seen in a separate section of the Emergency Department, as are those with psychiatric complaints. All residents are supervised by Emergency Department Attending Physicians.

The Emergency Department sees approximately 70,000 patients per year.  A very active air and ground transport system brings in a substantial number of patients each day.  Ground transport ride-a-longs can be arranged for interested students.

Bedside, experiential, and formal teaching occurs on an ongoing basis in the Emergency Department.  Students are always welcome. Rotations exist for 4th year students. For more information, access the link below. Others can "shadow" the Attending Physicians on an informal basis as their schedule permits. Residency information is provided below for upperclassmen.
