To set up a shadowing session, email the physician that you are interested in shadowing. When emailing the physicians simply indicate that you're an EMIG member at Duke interested in shadowing or observing in the Emergency Department. Schedule a time that is good for you and the physician and BE ON TIME!
For the shadowing date, wear scrubs, your white coat and your ID badge. Do not wear jeans and make sure you have no holes in your clothing.
When you arrive, go to the nurses station and ask for the physician you are meeting.
While you are there, take full advantage of the environment you are in. If the physician is busy, shadow anyone else who is willing to let you follow them. This includes nurses, PA's, residents, etc. Don't be shy! Go where the action is. Just remember that this session is for observation only.
Lastly, do not feel pressured to stay there all day/night. You may leave any time you wish.
