BIO
Dominic Crotty has been a member of the MMIL since August 2004. My thesis research is to develop, implement and enhance designs of a prototype dual modality SPECT-CT system dedicated to imaging breast cancer more effectively at an earlier stage of development. While I concentrate mainly on the CT sub-system, I have investigated issues that also concern the SPECT sub-system, issues that are unavoidable in this compact, common field-of-view, dual modality imaging device. My interests lie mainly in overall system component and sub-component design and the application of the device to imaging in a clinical setting, rather than in a lab environment.

While working in the lab as a full-time PhD student at Duke University, I am also working part-time in the Office of Commercialization at RTI International in the Research Triangle Park. This works involves investigating the commercial potential of novel technologies that researchers develop at RTI, a job that successfully marries my interests in technical deign and in business. Prior to enrolling at Duke, he played professional rugby in Ireland at national and regional level for 8 years during which time he also worked as a circuit design engineer for Analog Devices Inc. as part of a team designing commercial microelectronic integrated circuit components. In addition, he holds a Diploma in Financial Management from the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants in London, England.
