MISSION
A member of the Duke University Union, Freewater Presentations is dedicated to upholding the DUU mission to provide cultural, intellectual, educational, recreational, and social programming to complement the academic experience of Duke University students; and to provide enrichment for the University faculty, staff and employees, as well as the surrounding community; by screening quality films on Duke’s campus. Freewater Presentations’ programming reflects the tastes of the committee, which is open to all Duke undergraduates.
WHAT EXACTLY WE DO
Freewater Films, shown on Thursday and Friday nights, are recent releases that are sometimes independent or shown in a limited number of cities. Quadflix Films, recent popular movies, are shown on Saturdays and Sundays. These are some of the best movies of the year, though not everyone always has a chance to see them. Midnight Films, older movies that include cult hits, campy movies, musicals, and Hollywood classics, are shown on Friday nights. In addition to these movies, Freewater also screens 1-2 Tuesday series each semester, a collection of movies united by a common theme, director, actor, etc; as well as preview showings of upcoming films.
HOW WE DO IT
Trained members of the committee project and coordinate each showing of these movies. All members are also involved with choosing the films that Freewater Presentations brings, a process that takes place before the start of every semester, and is open to the input of all Duke undergraduates.

A BRIEF HISTORY
(Adapted from the Freewater Productions website)
Freewater Presentations started in the 1970s as the Freewater Film Society. The Film Society began showing films at Baldwin Auditorium to make money to fund its production projects. In the 1980s it joined DUU (Duke University Union), and eventually split into two separate committee, Freewater Presentations and Freewater Productions. Legend has it that the group got its name because one of its founders lived in a house where the utilities company was not charging them for water, but this version has been contested by some.
