MISSION

A member of the Duke University Union, Freewater Presentations is dedicated to upholding the DUU mission to provide cultural, intellectual, educational, recreational, and social programming to complement the academic experience of Duke University students; and to provide enrichment for the University faculty, staff and employees, as well as the surrounding community; by screening quality films on Duke’s campus.

WHO WE ARE

Freewater Presentations is entirely student-staffed and student-run, anywhere from choosing the films to manning the projection booth. Whether you’re interested in learning how to project, particularly savvy at designing marketing campaigns, thinking of going into the film industry, looking for a paying job on campus, or simply a film lover (and/or snob), there’s a place in Freewater Presentations for you! A BRIEF HISTORY

Quadrangle Pictures got its start showing movies in Page Auditorium in the 1920s. Back then, Quadrangle Pictures was one of the only places around town showing recent movies, and everyone in the Duke and Durham community flocked to Page to see the week’s latest film. The Freewater Film Society started in the 1970s as a separate entity, and showed films in Baldwin Auditorium to fund its production projects. In the 1980s, the Freewater Film Society joined DUU (Duke University Union), and merged with Quadrangle Pictures (now Quadflix). The Film Society later split into two separate committees, Freewater Presentations (which now exclusively shows movies on campus) and Freewater Productions (which now exclusively funds the making of movies on campus). Legend has it that Freewater got its name because one of its founders lived in a house where the utilities company was not charging them for water.
