HOW TO GET INVOLVED

Freewater Presentations is entirely student-staffed and student-run, anywhere from choosing the films to manning the projection booth. Whether you’re interested in learning how to project, particularly savvy at designing marketing campaigns, thinking of going into the film industry, looking for a paying job on campus, or simply a film lover (and/or snob), there’s a place in Freewater Presentations for you!

1. Join our group on DukeGroups.com

The FH20 Committee listing on DukeGroups.com will put you in touch with everyone else in the group, so you can stay updated on changes to our calendar, minutes from weekly meetings, upcoming special events, chat about the newest films, and anything else that may come up. Visit DukeGroups.com to sign up.

2. Come to our weekly meetings

Meetings take place in the DUU office (located on the upper level of the Bryan Center, in OSAF) on Sundays at 8 PM. This is when we check in with each other to discuss the previous week’s showings, talk over marketing ideas for next week’s films, pick up flyers, watch movie trailers, and more.

3. Get involved with one of the sub-committees

There are several subcommittees in Freewater: Marketing, Finances, Shipping, Coordinating, and Projecting. We ask that all members be involved with at least one area of the committee (and in fact, many members are involved with several).

Marketing is responsible for coming up with and executing marketing campaigns for our films and the Freewater Presentations identity. These can range anywhere from t-shirt designs and teaser postcards, to e-Print flyers, Powerpoint/Keynote slides to show before our films, and updating the website and connected calendars, to more unusual guerilla marketing tactics. The Marketing Chair is responsible for oversight of the Marketing Committee.

Finances is a one-man (or -woman) job. The CFO of the committee is responsible for collecting attendance sheets each week and updating our attendance records as well as our distributor’s records. The CFO is also responsible for making sure we’re staying within our budget for the fiscal year, by communicating with Angie Bowes, OSAF Accounting Specialist.

Shipping is also a one-man (or -woman) job. The Shipping Chair is responsible for ensuring that our films arrive on time and leave on time, by communicating with our distributors, our OSAF advisor, the Chair, and the Head Projectionist.

Coordinators are responsible for opening the box office before showings, selling tickets, and keeping track of attendance. Coordinators also assist the projectionist-on-duty with sound checks and anything else the projectionist may require. Coordinators are expected to arrive 20 minutes before the showing, and stay 15 minutes after the film has started.

Projectionists are responsible for projecting the films, which arrive on 35mm film, DVD, or VHS, as well as opening the theater before the showing, turning on the house lights, and ensuring the safety of patrons during the film. Projectionists may also be:

Splicers, who are responsible for bringing the film down from the DUU office to the projection booth, and assembling the film before that week’s showings. Films generally arrive 2-5 days in advance.

Unsplicers, who are responsible for disassembling the film after that week’s showings, and returning the film to the DUU office.

Head Projectionists are responsible for training and supervising all projectionists, including keeping track of the projectionist schedule, ensuring that films have been delivered, communicating with Theater Operations, and getting all active projectionists on payroll. Head Projectionists hold training sessions at the beginning of each semester for all interested students, but are also available for one-on-one training throughout the year.

Freewater Presentations is committed to maintaining all Projectionist positions as paying jobs (currently $7.40/hour), in recognition of the irreplaceable technical training that Projectionists have.

The Chair of Freewater Presentations is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization, as well as ordering films, seeking out co-sponsorship opportunties with other on-campus organizations, representing Freewater Presentations at weekly DUU board meetings, and defending Freewater Presentation’s budget at yearly DUU budget meetings.
