Who's an insider, who's an outsider? In increasingly multicultural societies, what constitutes any one person's heritage? What is positive engagement, and what is cultural co-optation? Are Mughal portraits of the Madonna and child 1) Christian art (because they represent a Christian subject); 2) Islamic art (because they were commissioned by Muslims and perhaps painted by Muslims); or 3) Hindu art (because they might have been painted by Hindus)?
