Muslim Networks: Medium, Methodology & Metaphor

"Reconfiguring Networks, Audiences, & Authority: 'Traditional' Islamic Learning in a New World"
Qasim Zaman (Religion, Brown University)

In what ways are the present-day networks of the traditionally educated Muslim religious scholars (the ulama) similar to or different from their earlier networks? What impact have these modern networks had on the ulama's religious authority? How do international scholarly networks inform or affect articulations of authority at local levels? What role does the state play in helping forge these networks? This paper will focus on the sometimes interrelated careers of certain prominent religious scholars from South Asia and the Arab world.
