Duke-NCCU STEM Partnership

Eligibility

Duke University is seeking teams of research-active faculty with the Colleges of Science and Technology at NCCU and STEM departments at Duke University to submit applications to the Duke-NCCU STEM Partnership for $25K research awards. Areas of emphasis include Biology, Biologica/Biomedical Sciences, and Chemistry. Engineering, Environmental, Mathematics (Computational Sciences) with a biomedical or chemical focus are also eligible. It is best if the research activities of the NCCU and Duke faculty members have overlapping goals so that joint publications can arise; however, learning technical skills or having access to techniques and instrumentation that can further a research agenda is also of interest. Research-active faculty is defined as having published in the scientific literature within the last calendar year. Applicants who do not meet this criterion, but are interested in a STEM partnership, must provide a clear explanation. The proposed research plan must substantially involve an NCCU Masters of Science student. The NCCU student should have completed at least one semester of course work, must be enrolled full-time at NCCU, and must be willing to devote the majority of his/her time to thesis research for successful completetion of the proposed project in the designated period.

Outcomes

At the end of the 12-month period, it is expected that (1) the NCCU faculty member applies for external funding, (2) the Duke faculty member assists in the application process, and (3) the NCCU student completes an application to a graduate program at a PhD granting institution upon his or her graduation.

Recommended Budget of a $25k Award

• $15K stipend for NCCU MS student
• $5K tuition for NCCU MS student
• $5K supplies and travel
