SUMMER SPANISH IMMERSION IN MEXICO

The Centro Internacional de Lengua y Cultura (International Center for Language and Culture) at (see UDLA-Puebla) offers a Spanish Immersion Program for foreign students which provides the opportunity to use the language in real contexts while learning. This program is designed to ensure that each student aquires the linguistic structures that are needed for successful communication in real sociocultural contexts. Students will be able to improve their Spanish not only inside the classroom but outside in real life situations. This will better enable them to master the Spanish language in more practical ways. This is a six week program.. The program is offered for students at least 18 years old. To determine the student's appropiate level of proficiency in Spanish (basic, intermediate, advanced or superior), it is necessary to take a placement exam. The exam is available at placement exam. --- For the basic and intermediate levels, two academic courses of Spanish language are offered. The objective is to learn how to use grammatical structures and vocabulary to improve the use of Spanish in real context. --- For advanced and superior levels, one language course and one content course is required. The courses are taught from Monday to Thursday from 8:30 a.m.- 12:10 p.m.


Summer French Immersion in Québec

Duke undergraduate and graduate students can apply at the Center for North American Studies for the annual six-week summer French immersion program which takes place at the University of Québec, Trois-Rivières Campus. Trois-Rivières lies on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River, halfway between Montreal and Québec City. Each summer, Trois-Rivières hosts a lively festival that includes theatrical shows, street activities, arts and crafts, parades, and fireworks making this historic city a perfect environment in which to learn French.

L'École internationale de français (EIF) offers outstanding French language training. The program is designed to provide students with the ability to communicate effectively in French putting an emphasis on written and oral skills. The highly qualified teaching staff from Canada and France will help you progress in your learning of International French and lead you to discover the riches of Québec culture.

Application deadlines: April 1, 2003 for Session I and June 1, 2003 for Session II.

Proficiency testing: Students are tested upon their arrival at Trois-Rivières, and placed in small groups of about 16 people at the same level of French competency. Groups range from those with little or no French, to very advanced.

Activities: In addition to classes, students have the opportunity to participate in social and cultural activities, concerts, films and various sports. Weekend trips to Montreal and Québec City are also planned.

Cost: *$2,200. This fee includes tuition, room and board, all workshops and social activities. In addition, there is a $50.00 deposit fee (refunded to those who successfully complete the program).

Scholarships: Through a generous endowment from the estate of Anna E. Vitale and Conley C. Kemper, the North American Studies Center is able to offer partial scholarships to support a limited number of students wishing to participate in this program.
