Operation
Smile ("Op Smile") is a private,
not-for-profit volunteer medical services organization
providing reconstructive surgery and related health
care to indigent children and young adults in
developing countries and the United States. Operation
Smile provides education and training around the
world to physicians and other health care professionals
to achieve long-term self-sufficiency. Operation
Smile International has been dedicated to restoring
the smiles and human dignity of people who have
been afflicted with congenital facial and functional
abnormalities.
The
organization was founded in 1982 by Dr. William
P. Magee, a plastic surgeon, and his wife Kathleen,
a nurse and social worker. Over the last 23 years
over 90,000 children have been treated on and
over 10,000 health care professionals have been
trained. An important fact to remember is that
every $1 donation yields $6 more in additional
program services.
Duke
University's chapter seeks to support Operation
Smile by raising awareness of the needs of the
children around the world, as well as to aid in
fundraising. Our members participate in, as well
as, plan many events for the Duke student and
local population. Throughout the year, these events
either fundraise or inform the community of upcoming
missions or the recent success of Operation Smile.
