Policy Statement on the Naming of New Buildings

With respect to new buildings in the priority listing of University needs, we will continue the existing policy of naming the building for the donor when the donor's gift provides at least half of the private cost of the new building. We should attempt to secure from the naming donor an endowment for maintenance of the building, although this is not required for the naming.

The Executive Committee [of the Board of Trustees], as in similar instances, would retain the flexibility to negotiate individual cases where the best interests of the University are served by some alternative arrangement.

Policy Statement on the Naming of Existing University Buildings

Existing buildings as yet unnamed are available to be named for a donor under each of the following situations:

  1. In cases of major renovations which extend throughout an existing building, the building can be named for the donor provided that the donor's gift covers at least one-half of the cost of the major renovation and maintenance. It is not possible to spell out precisely what constitutes a major renovation, but this is a matter that can be resolved in individual cases.

  2. Existing unnamed buildings may be named for donors in cases where substantial gifts are made by donors to endow programs carried on within those buildings. Again, it is not possible to spell out precise guidelines as to the meaning of "substantial," but individual cases can be readily resolved.

It is further recognized that many gifts toward renovation or programs might suitably result in a portion of a building being named for the donor--that is, a lecture room a classroom, a library area.
