About Us

Purpose
The purpose of Duke Outing Club is to promote outdoor activities among its members and to foster a general appreciation for nature in the larger community. This is accomplished though meetings, programs and especially trips that take advantage of outdoor opportunities that abound in the Duke area.

Meetings
Outing Club meetings are generally held weekly during the academic year and less frequently during the summer. They feature information about upcoming trips, reports on past trips, and information about future programs. Outing Club meetings are always open to the public for anyone interested in attending or becoming a member.

Trips
Trips are the most important facet of the Outing Club. Outing Club members go camping, hiking, caving, rock climbing, mountaineering, fishing, sailing, goofing, windsurfing, paintballing, backpacking, hang gliding, scuba diving, skiing, whitewater rafting, sky diving, bungee jumping, and virtually any other recreational activity you can imagine. Trips are led by Outing Club members themselves, are informal, and go out almost every weekend. Information about upcoming trips can be found HERE . Any Outing Club member who is interested in doing so can lead a trip.

Advantages of Membership
In addition to access to trips, Outing Club membership offers
many other benefits. The most frequently used benefit is access to the Outing Club Gear Locker, located in the basement of the Parking and Traffic Services Building, 2010 Campus Drive. For a returnable deposit of two checks (one for the value of the equipment, one for a late fee), Outing Club members can obtain free access to a vast array of very expensive equipment to use on either personal excursions or Outing Club trips. Equipment includes everything from tents and sleeping bags to carabiners, bicycles and rafts.

Also, the Outing Club reimburses any member who drives his or her personal vehicle on an Outing Club trip at rate of $0.10 per mile. Reimbursement request forms can be requested from the treasurer. Filled out forms should be submitted to the treasurer along with signed Duke University Travel Expense Voucher form (blanks can be obtained from the treasurer).
