Visiting Lecturer hosted by Parents@Duke and partner organizations
in January 2005

Dr. Saranna Thornton
Elliot Associate Professor of Economics
Hampden-Sydney College

Dr. Thornton visited Duke on Friday, January 28, 2005 to share her expertise on issues behind the balance of family and work responsibilities in academic institutions.  She has recently published an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education:  "Where--Not When--Should You Have a Baby?" (October 8, 2004).  She is also the author of a study through the American Association of University Professors, "Pregnancy in the Academy: Some Questions and Answers for Faculty and Administrators."

Background information on Dr. Thornton, including a brief biography and a copy of the Chronicle of Higher Education article which inspired our invitation, is available at http://www.duke.edu/~etchuck/Thornton%20background.pdf.
