Dr. Larry M. Wortzel spoke on "Fitting China into US Policy Towards Asia". Dr. Larry M. Wortzel is Director of the Asian Studies Center, the Heritage Foundation. He was a Military Intelligence
Officer and Foreign Area Officer concentrating on China and East Asia.
Dr. Wortzel is a graduate of Infantry Officer Candidate School. He was a Marine infantryman and a non-commissioned officer in the U.S. Army Security Agency before commissioning. Colonel Wortzel has served in infantry units, on the Department of the Army Staff, and in the Office of Secretary
of Defense. He earned a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Hawaii in 1984 and has served two tours of duty as a military attached in China. Colonel Wortzel is the author of three books: "Class in China" (Greenwood Press, 1987), "China's Military Modernization" (Greenwood Press, 1988), and "Contemporary Chinese Military History" (Greenwood Press, forthcoming, October 1999). He is also the author of several articles on China and Asian security. Colonel Wortzel's most recent SSI studies include: "China's Military Potential", Oct 98; "The Future U.S. Military Presence in Asia: Landpower" and the "Geostrategy of American Commitment", Apr 99.
