North Carolina Zoo
4401 Zoo Pkwy, Asheboro, NC
North Carolina has a wonderful zoo in Asheboro, North Carolina. The driving time is about 75 minutes from Chapel Hill, it takes about 5 hours to visit all the interesting sites in the zoo. I went there with my family on January 5, 2007, and we had a great time there. The route I took was 15‐501, then 64 to Asheboro. After you reach Asheboro, look for the sign to the zoo (the sign is on your right, but you need to turn left at the sign).

Duke University Lemur Center
You need to make reservation to visit the Lemur Center. Highly recommended.

Fearrington Village
It is a very nice community. I visit the village at least twice a year to see the cows and sheep, browse in the bookstore, have a pleasant afternoon coffee and desert in the café, and drive around the neighborhood. A great Saturday afternoon activity for your family.

Historic Sites

Duke Homestead
The Duke family used to own 80% of the American tobacco industry. Visit their homestead to see where and how they built the tobacco empire.

Bennett Place
Site of the negotiation of the civil war's largest troop surrender. You will learn a lot about the American civil war
at this place. A great place to learn about American history.

UNC Morehead Planetarium
At Morehead Planetarium and Science Center you can experience dazzling multimedia star shows, varied exhibits, year-round programming for all ages and stellar shopping at the Infinity Gift Shop.

When weather permits, visitors can observe the moon, planets, star clusters and nebulae directly through the telescope as well as obtain images with an electronic CCD camera.

Trader Joe's
1393 Kildaire Farms Rd.Cary, NC 27511
Store Hours: 9 am – 9 pm
Phone: 919-465-5984
Trader Joe's is a very popular grocery chain store on the west coast. It opened its first store in North Carolina a few month ago. The store is in Cary, not very convenient for those of us living in Chapel Hill. But it is a very different grocery store than Harris Teeter or Food Lion. I go there quite often. It might be too far for those who live in Chapel Hill.

Whole Foods Market
81 S Elliott Rd Chapel Hill, NC 27514

Our favorite grocery store, a lot of organic foods.

I like the atmosphere here, very relaxing. Not easy to find if you do not know Durham well. You can find the directions at their website.
