The Wiegand Foundation awarded Duke University a grant to support a program entitled "Pivotal Ideas in World Civilizations." The program's purpose is to expose Duke undergraduates and the larger campus community to the ideas and traditions that shape the modern world. The centerpiece of the program is the "Wiegand Foundation Distinguished Visitors." These visiting public intellectuals will share with students multiple perspectives on values and world traditions.

We will host approximately 3-4 visitors during each of 4 consecutive academic semesters, beginning in Fall 1999. Each semester will be organized around a particular theme.

Fall 1999: "Time and Value"

Spring 2000: "Social Hierarchy/Equality"

Fall 2000: "Perspectives on Distributive Justice from First and Third Worlds"

Spring 2001: "Law and Society"
