Duke University's Post-baccalaureate Research Education Program is designed for extremely motivated students who have recently completed their bachelor's degree, and who wish to obtain more experience and preparation before entering a PhD graduate program. Duke PREP scholars will engage in one or two years of intensive research experience, along with formal course work and other development activities such as GRE preparation courses and public presentations. PREP scholars work on a research project under the supervision of an experienced Duke faculty mentor, in a laboratory with PhD graduate students and/or postdoctoral fellows. The program also features a weekly PREP course designed to strengthen important skills for graduate school, one additional undergraduate or graduate course per semester, weekend retreats devoted to the ethical conduct of research and to the graduate school application process, participation in local and national research symposia, and a variety of social activities. PREP scholars will receive a stipend similar to that of a graduate student in the biological sciences (currently $24,000 per year). The program is open to students from groups that are underrepresented in the biomedical sciences, who have completed their bachelors degree within the last three years and who are US citizens or permanent residents.
