**After

**I’ll get the key posted in the next
few days …
(10/30/02) The Psychology Graduate School Forum
for Undergraduates will be held on Tuesday, November 5th from 5:30-7 in
Zener Auditorium. Professors Carl Erickson, Tim Strauman, Phil Costanzo,
and Roberto Cabezo will discuss the different types of graduate programs in
Psychology and advice for applying to graduate school. In addition
current graduate students will be available to give tips for applying to
graduate school. Pizza and refreshments follow.
(10/22/02) Sample Test for the Third
portion of the course has been posted. There’s a lot of material in this
segment. There will be no auditory system questions on the test. Unless,
I specifically mention them in lecture, you won’t be responsible for the names
of drugs or anatomical loci in the brain. However, I do expect you to know the
half dozen or so neurotransmitters that we discuss and the general divisions of
the brain (as reviewed in lecture).
(10/15/02) Concept Topics for the Third
portion of the course have been posted on the web site.
(10/11/02) SECOND EXAM Grades are now posted on
the “Blackboard” system. Log on at
- http://courses.duke.edu/
Performance on the second test was good. Average = 42.6 (see syllabus for details on course
grade, but basically multiply by 2 for your grade)
** There were two questions for which, because of ambiguities, two answers
were accepted (the ‘kin selection’ question and the ‘above average’
question)
** The question regarding parental behavior by rats turned out to be too
confusing. To adjust, 1 point was added to everyone’s score (this means
that the few people who did get it right also benefited).
NOTE: Grades from both tests were used to compute your midterm grades
that were reported today.

(10/6/02) Just a reminder that
Steve and I are available at lunch on Wednesdays and for coffee (@
the Perk) in the hour before class on Fridays. We try not to give away any
test questions, but it’s a good time to talk to us about issues related to the
material we’re covering or psychology in general.
(9/26/02) Sample Test
for the Second portion of the course has been posted.

Your INFORMATION:
DUMA Art Exhibit: The Body Project
September 30 marks the beginning of an exciting month-long
event organized
by DUMA, Student Health and ESTEEM (Educational Support to
Eliminate Eating
Misconceptions - a Duke peer education group). From 4:30 - 5:30 pm, a
specialized tour will be given of the museum. Featured pieces of art
center around the theme, "Depictions of women in
art". Discussions and
commentary will focus on how ideals of beauty have changed
over the course
of history and why women are painted in particular ways (as
the focus of
sexual objectification, as artistic subjects, purely for
aesthetic
interest). The
tour will look at Greek, religious, Renaissance, Dutch, and
African pieces of art.
If you teach a class that discusses any of these
subjects (art, body image, the representation of women) or if your class
could benefit from seeing this exhibit, please encourage your
students to
come. We ask
that you RSVP to Jenna Williams (jmw29@duke.edu) with what
day you wish to attend (Sept. 30, Oct. 7, Oct. 21 or Oct. 28)
and the
number of people you expect to show up. Also, please forward this email to
other lists/individuals that might be interested.
(9/22/02) Concept Topics for the Second
portion of the course have been posted on the web site.
(9/21/02) FIRST EXAM Grades are now posted on the
“Blackboard” system. Log on at
- http://courses.duke.edu/
Performance on the first test was fairly good. Average = 42.4 (see syllabus for details on course
grade, but basically multiply by 2 for grade)
** There were two questions for which, because of ambiguities, two
answers were accepted (the epinephrine question and the anorexia question)
** On the two accidental duplicate questions, you were not penalized for
getting the question wrong the second time
NOTE: Grades were adjusted to deal with the ‘duplicate’ –today-, so
make sure you’ve checked your grade after 12noon 9/21

(9/16/02) FILM: I will be showing a portion of the moving and provocative
documentary “Titticut Follies” by Frederick Wiseman on Wednesday 9/18 before
class (from 10:00am to 10:15 in our classroom). If you have the opportunity,
you may find this film about a mental institution for the criminally insane
(1967) of interest. It was banned in Massachusetts.
ALSO REMEMBER: You are invited to join Steve and I for lunch on
Wednesday or meet us on Friday morning at the ‘Perk’ before class …
(9/12/02) Sample test for the first segment of
the course is now available here. Also some new links …
(9/2/02) Periodically, I'll
put new links to interesting stuff on the home page ... there are a couple of
new ones today.
(9/2/02) EMAIL PROBLEMS
? Our departmental email server
periodically screens out email that is believed to be virus infested. If you've
sent me an email and I haven't responded in a day or so, consider this as a
possibility and send another email or give me a call. [Current problem mail
from: bcv@duke.edu]
(9/1/02) Links to Experiment Sign-Up Site and to
Lecture Outlines now posted on home page.
(8/28/02) Meeting Fridays for
coffee at the "Perk" ~ 9am ...
(8/28/02) **Note that there is
a typo on the original syllabus. Exams 1 and 3 are both on Fridays, not
Wednesdays. The dates were correct. The syllabus here has been corrected to
show the right day of the week.
(8/28/02) I have posted the
Concept Topics for the First Segment of the course. Access them from the home
page.
(8/26/02) IMPORTANT !!! I've just put a link on the home
page to information on the Research Participation Requirement. Please read
through the material and bring us your signed "Option Choice" form in
class soon.
Opportunities for low
pressure get-togethers with the instructor and TA ...
On Fridays, I'll be
having coffee in the Perk (coffee bar on the second floor of the library)
during the hour or so before class. I'd be happy to have you join me for
informal discussion of course topics, current news, or life. See ya there ...
On Wednesdays, I invite you to join me and the TA's for lunch -- a little discussion of the course and Psychology, but mostly just to informally get to know each other. You are welcome to join us whenever you have a chance.
Details in Class each week with a sign-up sheet.
