REMEDY at Duke is a
volunteer program at Duke
University organized
to recover usable surplus medical supplies and distribute them via
Duke-affiliated projects to areas of need overseas. The program was
started in 1996 by Duke medical students and was known as “Duke
Recovers”. In 2003, Duke Hospital created an official surplus supply
policy and the program adopted the name REMEDY at Duke, modeled after a
program started at Yale
University.
Many hospitals throughout the United States have similar
programs for donating usable surplus.
REMEDY at Duke is sponsored
by Duke University Medical Center
and the Duke Global Health Institute. The Global Health Institute also
coordinates the donation of surplus medical equipment (machines, monitors,
etc) through its “Duke PLUS” program.
REMEDY at Duke MISSION STATEMENT:
o Reduce
medical waste at Duke through the recovery and recycling of usable surplus
medical supplies.
o Contribute
usable medical surplus for use in international humanitarian medical
assistance.
o Promote
awareness of global health care issues within the Duke and greater Durham area
communities.
o Provide a
public service opportunity for Duke students, faculty, and staff.
