Welcome to REMEDY at Duke!
REMEDY at Duke is a volunteer program at Duke University organized to recover usable surplus medical supplies and
distribute them via Duke-affiliated projects to areas of need overseas.
OUR
MISSION STATEMENT
- Reduce medical waste at Duke
through the recovery and recycling of usable surplus medical supplies
- Reduce health disparities in
developing countries
- Promote awareness of global health
issues within the duke and greater Durham community
- Provide a public
service opportunity for Duke students, faculty and staff
HOW
IT STARTED
In 1996 several
Duke medical students began collecting usable surplus from Duke
Hospital to donate to various charities doing overseas work. In 2004,
interested staff, students and administrators reviewed the safety,
compliance and liability issues associated with this effort and the
Health Center approved a more formal process for handling surplus
supplies. At that time the program adopted the name "REMEDY at Duke",
using a model developed at Yale University in use at many hospitals
throughout the United States .
In 2006, the
entire surplus program at Duke was redesigned so that the University
and Health System could manage its resources more effectively, lower
operational costs, better support local and global communities, and
enhance efforts to create a more sustainable environment. REMEDY at
Duke is one component of this effort and works closely with the Duke
Global Health Institute, which coordinates the donation of surplus
medical equipment (machines, monitors, etc) through its "Duke PLUS"
program.
