Cadet Louis Ortiz
Duke 2012

ROTC at Duke University has provided me with a unique opportunity to do many things that otherwise would not have been possible. Getting familiar with the workings of ROTC was not only fun and exciting but it has provided insight into the way in which the Army operates. This experience has provided me with not only understanding but a sense of security for the future that I consider invaluable. Although I am only an MS1, I am confidant and excited about what awaits during the next three years.

Cadet Alexandra Shams
Duke 2012

I joined the Blue Devil Battalion at the beginning of my freshman year at Duke because I was looking for a smaller community within the university that I could invest myself in. Coming from a tight knit family and a very small high school in Boulder, Colorado, the idea of leaving my solid support system for a much more independent life at college seemed quite daunting, ROTC was an option I had always considered because I saw it as a way to pay for college and secure a meaningful future life, but Duke’s ROTC program caught my attention in particular because it has the small community feel that I was looking for. There are only a limited number of cadets in our battalion, but as a result each member of the program has access to great resources in the forms of accessible cadre and opportunities for leadership experience. After only one semester with ROTC, I am extremely pleased with my choice because I have made great friends, improved my physical fitness, and become a more well-rounded person with the tools to be successful at Duke and beyond.
