You have chosen to follow the interactive literary guidebook of youth in early modern England. The guidebook is meant to be used as a demonstration of how a child should be raised, beginning in infancy and stopping at adulthood. Although the term infancy is rather self-explanatory, adulthood in the context of the time peridod is a little more vague. It was used to refer to the stage of life after childhood when an individual had reached social maturity but this obviously happened for different people at different times. It was generally accepted that males gained entry into adulthood gaining experience in a profession or trade and the accumulation of wealth, whether it be from work or inheritance. For both sexes, though, marriage was considered one of the greatest defining forces in the entry into adulthood. (7) |
