SWASHING

According to the Oxford English Dictionary, swashing is characterized by ostentation, or by showy or blustering behaviour; swaggering; swashbuckling; dashing. To make a noise as of swords clashing or of a sword beating on a shield; to fence with swords; to bluster with or as with weapons; to lash out; hence, to swagger. Related to a swashbuckler, who is a swaggering bravo or ruffian; a noisy braggadocio.
