Dash did Drub:

Both "dash" and "drub" meant a violent blow or strike. Dash, however, also had the meaning of "a hasty pen stroke," according to the Oxford English Dictionary. Throughout the ballad, the author has referred to the use of the pen in reference to Timothy's job as a scrivener. The use of dash in this phrase brings that connotation into play as Timothy's beating is described in terms of the source of his own profession.
