Helping Students Develop an Understanding of Global Citizenship through Study Abroad and Service Learning

Are you studying abroad in the fall? Would you like to engage in service learning while abroad?

Don't just watch another culture. Immerse yourself in it!
Don't just learn about the world’s problems. Help to solve them!

SEE! (Serve, Educate, Engage) the World is a student-run organization in its third year of supporting Duke students as domestic and international social change agents. The program provides participants with a comprehensive service-learning experience and revolves around participants’ study abroad experience. It is delivered through a three-stage model:

  1. In the semester prior to study abroad, a cross-cultural competency training which prepares participants for service abroad

  2. During study abroad, semester-long service with non-profits in their host countries, coupled with an online community through which participants serving around the world share their critical reflections

  3. Upon return to Duke, semester-long service with local organizations working to advance related causes within the Duke and Durham community, and a student-taught academic course which examines the connections that students have experienced first-hand between global social justice issues and local ones
