About Us

The Student Interest Group in Neurology/Neurosurgery (SIGN) at Duke University School of Medicine is part of a network of more than 150 SIGN chapters in medical schools across the United States and Canada.  The American Academy of Neurology (AAN) founded SIGN in 1998.  SIGN at Duke is a very active group, now sponsored by the AAN and Duke Medical School’s Davison Council.  We currently have over 70 members, including first through fourth-year medical students.

SIGN fosters medical student interests in Neurology and Neurosurgery and other Neurology related fields by providing opportunities for students to interact with faculty members and explore career opportunities.  Our primary activities include monthly lunch seminars and a formal mentorship program.  Dr. Cory Adamson of the Duke Neurosurgery Department serves as the SIGN faculty advisor.  To sign up for our mentorship program, please sign up for our mailing list and contact one of the officers regarding finding an appropriate mentor (contacts). Other experiences offered through SIGN include conferences, preceptorships, and research opportunities.

SIGN events at Duke include lunch seminars on the first or second Monday of each month. Topics alternate between Neurology and Neurosurgery and numerous other neurologically related subjects. The lunches provide a small group setting for students to interact with faculty members about their clinical practice or research, as well as to inquire about potential career paths in the field. To suggest a speaker for one of our lunch seminars, feel free to email one of the group officers (contacts).  For ideas, please check out the list of past and upcoming SIGN events.
