Top Exporters and Importers
Though arguably a competitive industry, the auto industry's international trade patterns suggest that there are a strong set of firms and countries who dominate the worlds share of imports, exports, and production. One doesn't need to look hard to find empirical evidence of this as that the top importers and exporters of the auto industry have been, for the most part, stagnant over the past twenty years. For example, the top five exporters in 1985 are still the top five exporters in 2005, and of the top five importers in 1985, only one of them are currently not in the top five.

Data from UN Comtrade[4]
Especially consistent in their standings were Germany and Japan as exporters; they have shared the top two positions for over twenty years. The USA has also exhibited remarkable consistency as an importer - being the sole major importer over the past two decades.
