Choosing A Drink The choice to drink a specific type of wine may vary in relation to the ocassion, where affinities for particular wines may come into play. At the same time, wine has increasingly changed from an expensive addition to a celebratory occasion, to a "default" drink of
choice at ordinary meals. Wine has become a drink that adds value to a meal where people may bond with others, a means for relaxation or for entertainment. The entertainment and bonding aspects often derive from the fact that there are not a wide variety of single-portion serving formats available. Instead, when someone wishes to drink a glass of wine, they must open an entire bottle, which is more condusive to sharing and company. What Do You Suggest? Wine is something that many people wish they knew more about, and because of that, they often do not want to seem ignorant on the subject. Something that has become very prevalent in many countries, including the United States, is asking the merchant what they suggest as an appropriate wine to accompany a meal. Also, and this may be seen on menus across the country, merchants often will provide wine suggestions on their menu, pairing the "correct" wine with the meal a patron has chosen. This puts the power in the hands of the merchant in deciding what wines are sold and marketed the most, affecting the global wine industry through this retail point. The same is true for traditional wine retailers, as opposed to a restaurant, who are now asked more and more often for suggestions on wines to buy. |
