Summer
of Service is a program that offers Duke University
undergraduates an opportunity to participate in service-based
internships for non-profit and community organizations for
6-8 weeks during the summer. Participants will live in a major
city and work directly with the people these organizations
serve. Summer of Service will arrange for students to live
with a Duke alumni host family, thereby fostering ties between
Duke alumni and current students.
Alumni Clubs in participating cities are asked to provide
opportunities for the student to interact with local alumni,
as well as contribute towards a $1000 stipend for each student
intern in their city. By making service based internships
attractive, accessible, and affordable, Summer of Service
hopes to contribute to the continuing education of the entire
Duke community and instill in its participants a greater
sense of civic responsibility.
Inspired by the outstanding Summer Service Project Internship
program at the University of Notre Dame, and Professor Tony
Brown's Enterprising Leadership Incubator, Summer of
Service is a program with a mission to change the Duke
undergraduate experience and benefit the nation's communities
at large. |
