Yousuf Al-Bulushi
was born in Bahrain and moved to Bainbridge Island,
Washington in 1989. He is a Political Science major
with a focus in International Relations. At Duke, he
plays soccer with the men's club soccer team, trombone
with the Duke Jazz Ensemble, andis currently chair of
HIWAR, a Duke student organization focused on political,
social and economic injustices in North Africa and the
Middle East. After high school, he traveled to Valencia,
Spain for a year, where he studied Spanish, played soccer,
and joined a local band. He spent last summer in Havana,
Cuba on a study abroad program with Wake Forest University
practicing Spanish and taking classes at the University
of Havana. Aside from traveling with SOW, he hopes to
spend this summer learning Arabic at Bir Zeit University
in Palestine.
Jainey Bavishi
is a junior from Charlotte, North Carolina, pursuing
a double-major in Public Policy Studies and Cultural
Anthropology. Last spring, she pursued a photography
documentary project on Silk Road Tea House in Chapel
Hill, a local Turkish tea house. Recently, Jainey co-founded
Ahimsa, the Jain Student's Association at Duke, a religious
organization for Jain students. As the summer intern
for the National Conference for Community and Justice
for the past two summers, Jainey planned and directed
youth residential leadership programs for high school
students addressing issues of social justice and inclusion
in different locations across the country. Following
the SOW trip this summer, as a participant of the Service
Opportunities in Leadership program, she will be working
in South Africa at an organization that deals with issues
concerning youth.
Matt Bradley is a sophomore from Arlington,
Virginia. He is planning to major in English with minors
in Economics and French. Matt writes for the daily Duke
newspaper, The Chronicle, as an Associate University
Editor. He covers the "Women and Minority Affairs"
beat, and has a strong interest in campus race relations.
He is also active in Duke's Model United Nations Club,
where he directed a committee at Duke's annual conference,
DISEC in 2001. Matt is very interested in international
affairs, especially third world development and global
issues (genocide, ethnic cleansing, disease, and refugee
situations). Following this interest, he would like
to travel to Africa this summer and work as an intern
in Francophone or Sub-Saharan Africa. After Duke, Matt
plans on joining the Peace Corps before pursuing a career
in international relations and diplomacy.
Jessica Clough is a junior from Kingston,
Jamaica and Valencia, Venezuela, majoring in Comparative
Area Studies and Political Science. At Duke she has
been a Resident Advisor for two years. She is involved
with Mi Gente: Asociacion de Estudiantes Latinos as
Political Affairs Chair, Pi Beta Phi Fraternity, and
is a campus mediator. During the summer of 2001, she
served as an intern for Tubo-Test: Oilfield Pipe Services,
a company in Anaco, Venezuela. Some of her other interests
include fashion and the media. She hopes to one day
work in politics in either Venezuela or Jamaica.
Mariana Carrera is a second year student
from Wellesley, Massachusetts. She is planning to major
in political science with a concentration in International
Relations. At Duke she is involved with the University
Scholars Program, the Edgemont Tutoring Program, and
the club lacrosse team. When not at Duke, she loves
traveling and visiting her relatives in Latin America.
Sona Chikarmane is a third year student
from Hazleton, Pennsylvania majoring in her self-designed
"Culture and Medicine: Global Perspectives in Health
Care." Intending on pursuing a career in medicine
and public health, this summer she interned at the Federal
Agency Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. She
also actively volunteers at the Duke Medical Center
and Walltown Ministries, tutoring Durham elementary
school students. In December 2001, she traveled to India
on a Center for International Studies Travel grant to
pursue research on Aruyvedic medical techniques.
Carolyn Cotterman is a second year
student from Los Angeles, California with a wide variety
of interests. She has conducted neurobiology research
under a grant from Howard Hughes, worked with Habitat
for Humanity in Alaska, explored Pisgah National Forest
with Duke's Outdoors Club, studied rural health in North
Carolina, and taught science at an elementary school
in Durham. Carolyn hopes to explore the intersection
of health, economics, and international relations, but
ask her next week, and you might hear a different story.
Courtney Crosson
is a second year student from Gainesville,
Florida. She is designing a major which integrates global,
cultural, and individual comprehensions of space. Courtney
is a practicing painter and also enjoys travel, hiking,
climbing, and working with children. She is the Climbing
Director for Project WILD (an Outward Bound modeled
organization), serves in the Duke Student Government
Visual Art Committee and Nasher Museum Advisory Board,
conducts research for a Developmental Psychology lab,
and volunteers both with an elementary school mural
painting class and WOODS (an environmental education
organization).
Malika de Silva is a sophomore from
Alliance, Ohio who plans on majoring in Political Science
with a concentration in International Relations. She
has worked on two documentary projects while at Duke,
one centered on two Burmese refugees in Durham and another
on South Asian-American identity. She enjoys spending
time at Trinity Cafe where she works. She is looking
forward to studying abroad in Cairo during the upcoming
fall semester.
Gabriel Griffin is a second year student
from Bainbridge Island, Washington majoring in English
and History. He is cofounder of the Duke organization
Hiwar, a group devoted to issues of political justice
in North Africa and the Middle East, serves as a first
year student resident advisor, and has spent periods
of time living in Japan and Italy. His interests include
reading as well as playing and writing music. He hopes
to study overseas before and after graduation and eventually
attend graduate school.
Willie Hinckley is a first year student
from Anchorage, AK. He participated in the Humanitarian
Challenges FOCUS last semester, but he is unsure of
his long-term academic goals. A participant in the August
Project WILD trip, he enjoys outdoor activities and
is a member of the Duke Outing Club. During his first
semester he rowed on the Duke Men's Crew novice squad.
Jenny Ihrie is a junior from Woodside,
California. She is majoring in Economics and History.
Recently she has become involved in a student run community
service group called Designing Devils that does art
projects with children at the Duke hospital. She also
enjoys photography and travel.
Vicki Kaplan is a sophomore from Los
Angeles, California, pursuing a major in History or
Cultural Anthropology. She is Associate Arts Editor
for Recess, Duke's weekly arts and entertainment magazine,
and is helping to start m.a.n.o. (mujeres aprendiendo
por nuevas oportunidades), a UNC-based tutoring program
for Hispanic immigrant women, at Duke. Vicki has also
worked as a student curator at the Duke University Museum
of Art and is an avid world traveler. A lover of nature,
Vicki spent the summer of 2001 working for the Sierra
Club in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Johanna Pemberton is a sophomore from
Silver Spring, Maryland, purusing a double major in
Public Policy and Comparative Area Studies. Last summer,
she worked with the Honduran Conservation Corps in El
Salvador doing earthquake relief. She is currently a
mentor for two Burmese Refugee children. She is also
active in Project WILD, serving as the Outreach Director
and a house course leader. In high school, she volunteered
on Standing Rock Lakota Reservation in South Dakota,
working with children and renovating a school.
Mark Pike is a second year student
from Virginia Beach, VA. He is majoring in Public Policy
studies. At Duke, Mark is active in Campus Council leadership
planning a variety of student activities. Mark is also
a member of the Club Soccer team and volunteers at Hillandale
Elementary School as a mentor and avid kickball player.
Mark's zodiac sign is a Taurus and he enjoys long walks
on the beach.
K arla Portocarrero is a junior from
Miami, Florida, majoring in Comparative Studies with
concentrations in Western Europe and Latin America.
During her freshman year at Duke, she was actively involved
in Mi Gente, the Latin American student's organization.
A member of the Service Opportunities in Leadership
program at Duke and committed to social justice, Karla
spent her summer working for the Union of Needletrades,
Industrial and Textile Employees in New York City. Currently,
Karla is studying abroad in Florence, Italy.
Monica Sekhon is a junior from Birmingham,
Alabama majoring in Political Science with a focus in
International Relations. During her time at Duke she
has been involved in the Mirecourt selective living
house, Duke Mock Trial, and the Duke chapter of APO
(a national service fraternity). During the fall semester
of 2001 she studied abroad in Florence, Italy. She spent
the previous summer interning in the Department of Trade
at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC. After graduation
she plans to attend law school and pursue a career in
international law.
