CONSTITUTION
THE TURKISH STUDENT ASSOCIATION
Article I -- Name
The name of the organization shall be the Duke University Turkish
Student Association.
Article II -- Purpose
The purpose of the Turkish Student Association is twofold. First,
it intends to create awareness of contemporary Turkey through talks,
cultural events, and gatherings. The talks will focus on current issues:
economy, foreign policy, and also on more informal topics such as travel
plans, folk music, or Turkish kitchen. Second, the Turkish Student
Association aims at fostering interaction between the members of the
expanding Turkish community at Duke.
Article III -- Membership
Section 1 -- Membership into the Turkish Student Association
shall be open to all registered Duke University students, staff, and faculty.
Section 2 -- Members of the Turkish Student Association shall be
accepted without discrimination on the basis of sex, race, religion,
national origin, sexual orientation, or physical disability.
Section 3 -- Those who devotionally have been commiting
their time and energy in helping TSA to achieve its goals,
leaving an outstanding trace of their existence on the works of
TSA, should be acknowledged with a "TSA Honorary Membership"
title. Those non-members who make donations to TSA should be acknowledged
with a "Friends of TSA" title.
Article IV -- Organization
Section 1
A. An officer's council consisting of president, vice-president,
secretary, treasurer, social chair and sports chair shall decide upon all
policy questions of the Turkish Student Association.
B. The membership shall elect the officers to the officer's
council and concurrently, shall reserve the right to remove any of the
elected officers from their office should he/she not fulfill the
position's responsibilities and duties.
C. With a majority vote of the members present at an official
meeting, the membership may delegate to the officer's council additional
responsibilities beyond their stated duties as deemed necessary to enable
the Turkish Student Association's activities.
Section 2 -- The officers of the officer's council shall
represent the Turkish Student Association at all functions, meetings, and
activities. The officers shall be accountable to the membership for the
organization of the Turkish Student Association and the communication
between the officer's council and the membership. The officer's council
shall also coordinate all Turkish Student Association activities and
programs. The duties and functions of the officers of the officer's
council are as follows:
A. President
1. Shall oversee all activities and projects of the Turkish
Student Association.
2. Shall carry unlimited signatory powers to access funds.
3. Shall serve as spokesman and/or liaison in all external
matters as a representative from the Turkish Student Association.
4. Shall moderate at all meetings of the Asian Student
Association and officer's council meetings.
B. Vice-President
1. Shall over take all the duties of the president in his/her absence.
2. Shall coordinate the officers of the Turkish Student Association.
C. Treasurer
1. Shall carry signatory power to access Turkish Student
Association funds.
2. Shall provide financial reports to the officer's council every
semester.
3. Shall be responsible for initiation and follow-through of
requisitions and accounts.
D. Secretary
1. Shall be responsible of keeping the minutes of meeting.
2. Shall provide minutes of the meetings to the officers council.
E. Social Chair
1. Shall be in charge of communication of members of the Turkish
Student Association within themselves.
2. Shall be responsible of campus wide advertisement of the
events of the Association.
3. Shall be in charge of keeping the Turkish Student
Associations home-page on WWW updated.
4. Shall carry signatory power to access Turkish Student
Association funds.
F. Sports Coordinator
1. Shall coordinate the sports activities of the association
members and arrange for the participation in the intramurals at the
university.
Section 3
A. Other committee members may be appointed by the Executive
council as the Executive council sees fit.
Article V -- Elections, Nominations, and Removal
Section 1
A. Elections for officers in the Executive council shall be held
annually during the Spring semester.
B. The outgoing president shall call for elections and should
allow a reasonable amount of time for a member's declaration of candidacy
to be submitted to membership.
Section 2
A. All members of the Turkish Student Association are eligible to
run for offices in the officer's council.
B. Candidates may run for as many positions he/she desires, but
may accede to only one office.
Section 3
A. Officers shall be elected by a majority vote of the members
present, at an officially called election meeting.
B. Each member shall submit one vote per position.
Article VI -- Amendments
The revisions to the Turkish Student Association constitution
shall be adopted by the officer's council.
