Chuan-Hua Chen, Assistant Professor

Dr. Chuan-Hua Chen is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at Duke University, where he directs research in interfacial flows and microfluidics at the Microscale Physicochemical Hydrodynamics Laboratory (µPHYL). Dr. Chen received his B.S. degree in Applied Mechanics from Peking University (1998) and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University (2004). Prior to joining Duke in 2007, he held positions as a postdoctoral associate at Princeton University and a research scientist at Rockwell Scientific Company. Dr. Chen received the NSF CAREER Award from the National Science Foundation (2009), and the ORAU Powe Award from Oak Ridge Associated Universities (2010) and the DARPA Young Faculty Award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (2010). His research work has appeared on the cover of Physical Review Letters, and  has been featured by The New York Times, Discovery Channel, and Science Magazine. Dr. Chen's group received numerous awards at professional conferences, including the Gallery of Fluid Motion at the APS DFD Annual Meeting (2009), and Best Poster Awards at the Faraday Discussions on Wetting Dynamics (2010) and the Gordon Research Conferences on Microfluidics (2003, 2011) .

 

Postdoctoral Associates

Xiaopeng Qu

Xiaopeng Qu received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (2010). After a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute for Dynamics and Self-Organization, he joined the µPHYL group in 2012. Xiaopeng's paper on bubble dynamics was selected as one of the Highlights of 2009 in the Journal of Micormechanics and Microengineering.

Ph.D. Students

Jonathan Boreyko

Jonathan B. Boreyko received his B.S. degree from Trinity College double majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Physics. He subsequently joined Duke University as a Ph.D. student with a Jame B. Duke Fellowship and a Pratt-Gardner Fellowship in 2007.

Fangjie Liu

Fangjie Liu received her B.S. degree from Fudan University majoring in Mechanics. She subsequently joined Duke University as a Ph.D. student with a fellowship from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science in 2010.

Undergraduate Students

William Scheideler

William J. Scheideler is a Class of 2013 student double-majoring in Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering at Duke University. He is a recipient of the Angier B. Duke Scholarship and the National Merit Scholarship.

Adam Williams

Adam J. Williams is a Class of 2013 student majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Duke University. He is a Pratt Research Fellow in the µPHYL group. Adam is a finalist for the National Merit Scholarship.

Katrina Wisdom

Katrina M. Wisdom is a Class of 2012 student majoring in Mechanical Engineering at Duke University. She is a Pratt Research Fellow in the µPHYL group. Katrina received numerous academic awards including a scholarship from the Duke Dance Program.
