The University Scholars Program for Undergraduates


Undergraduate University Scholars Yeney Hernandez; Spencer Eldred, and Lisa Ma,

Full Scholarship for Tuition, Room, Board, and Fees
Each undergraduate is awarded a University Scholarship providing full-tuition as well as housing, board, and mandatory fees for four years

Summer Enrichment Program
Undergraduate University Scholars may receive support for an intensive internship, research experience, or a summer abroad valued at up to $7000.

Study Abroad
Scholars may study abroad through an approved program for one or two semesters. Scholarship funding is transferrable.

Interdisciplinarity--Both Curricular and Extracurricular
Students can decide how they wish to pursue interdisciplinary interests.  Some may design their own curriculum through Duke's Program II; others may pursue double majors or certificate programs. Students also explore interdisciplinary approaches to knowledge through USP seminars and annual symposia.

Financial Support
Graduate and professional school University Scholars will receive the equivalent of one year's tuition as calculated by the Graduate and Professional Schools.

Conference Funding
Graduate and professional school University Scholars may apply for funding to support a presentation at an interdisciplinary conference or a conference outside of their primary discipline.

Graduate Mentor Awards
After the first year, graduate and professional school University Scholars may apply to be Graduate Mentors, receiving a generous fellowship and the opportunity to substantially shape the program's development.

Continuing Intellectual Support

Graduate and professional school students remain University Scholars throughout their tenure at Duke, collaborating with students in other disciplines and mentoring undergraduate University Scholars to help encourage interdisciplinary thinking.

The John Hope Franklin Center for Interdisciplinary and International Studies.

Named for the prominent African American historian and Duke Professor Emeritus, Dr. John Hope Franklin, the Franklin Center is home to a number of interdisciplinary programs, including the University Scholars Program, and serves as the base for many of our seminars during the year.
